The latest generation of advanced airbags is a manifestation of Acura’s commitment in maximizing passenger safety. Previously, in 1991, Acura had created Vertical Deploying Passenger Airbag which has a unique design that reduces the potential for injury due to inflated airbags, until the technology was adopted by the automotive industry for several years.
Continuing this achievement, in 2021, Honda R&D America together with safety feature supplier, Autoliv, successfully created the latest airbag technology offered to other automotive manufacturers to improve the safety performance of their products.
“The latest Acura TLX is one of our team’s designs in Ohio, to realize innovation and create a safer, accident-free society,” said Jim Keller, President of Honda R&D America. “I am very proud to see how our team of engineers conducted research on brain injuries, then gave birth to an important achievement in the history of airbag design.”
All New Acura TLX aims to achieve 5 stars in safety feature tests, achieving “Good” value in all crash tests and “Superior” specifically for front crash tests through the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) held by the American Traffic Safety Agency.

The latest technology from front passenger airbags on Acura TLX cars is designed to face impact from the front of the side, potentially causing the rider’s head to turn at high speed and cause serious injury.
The technology builds on research on brain injuries studied by santis at the American Transportation Agency, which produced the Brain Injury Criteria (BrIC) methodology to measure the rate of brain injury in an accident.
Compared to the use of the Single Inflatable Chamber (one airbag bag) usually found in conventional airbags, acura’s latest airbag design operates like a baseball catcher glove.
First, an inflatable bag will catch the rider’s head from the front side, reducing the pressure to the head during impact. At the same time, the other two pockets on the left and right sides will expand, protecting the rider’s head from fatal impacts while preventing the head from twisting which can cause serious injury.
Basically, passenger front airbag’s latest design works with four main components: three pockets located right on the front, in front of the right, and in front of the left to secure the head from different sides, as well as a panel connecting the right and left sides of the three airbags.
In addition, the All New Acura TLX now also features knee airbags for riders and passengers in the front seat. The airbags are designed to prevent fatal impacts on the knees, supported by Front Airbags and Seatbelts.
Knee-specific airbags have been designed to follow the contours of calves and legs, providing enough space to get in and out of vehicles after an accident.
In all, the All New Acura TLX features eight airbags as the most compared to the previous generation, including front side, side and knee front airbags equipped with impact sensors.
